Basic Components for Networking System:
Hardware Components:
Network Interface Card (NIC):
A network interface card (NIC) is a computer circuit board or card that is
installed in a computer so that it can be connected to a network. Personal
computers and workstations on a local area network (LAN) typically contain a
network interface card specifically designed for the LAN transmission
technology, such as Ethernet token ring. Network interface cards provide a
dedicated, full-time connection to a network.
Modem:
An electronic device that allows computers to communicate over ordinary telephone lines called
Modem also known as modulator/demodulator. A modem works with your telephone line to translate
analog telephone signals into digital serial data and also translate digital serial data into analog telephone
signals. There are two types of modems: internal and external. Most home and portable computers connect to the Internet through as-needed
dial-up connection. The modem provides the connection interface to the Internet
service provider.
Hub: In data communications, a hub is a place of convergence where data arrives from
one or more directions and is forwarded out in one or more other directions. A
hub usually includes a switch of some kind. (And a product that is called a "switch" could usually be
considered a hub as well.) The distinction seems to be that the hub is the place
where data comes together and the switch is what determines how and where data
is forwarded from the place where data comes together. Regarded in its switching
aspects, a hub can also include a router.
Cable/DSL Router: DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) is a technology for bringing high
bandwidth information to homes and small businesses over ordinary copper telephone lines.
The cable/DSL router connects multiple PCs to a high-speed Internet connection or to an Ethernet
backbone. Configurable as a DHCP server, the EtherFast router acts as the only externally
recognized Internet device on your local area network (LAN).
